Das und mehr ist neu auf http://www.psionteklogix.com/battery-pdk/netBookBatteries.htm

Batteries and docking stations for the netBook and Series 7

The netBook and Series 7 have two batteries - a main Lithium-ion cell, and a backup battery.

Main Battery

There is only one kind of main battery available for the netBook and Series 7 range, a Psion Lithium-ion cell running the entire length of the back of the unit.

They are removable, and extended use of the netBook or Series 7 is possible if you have a second charged battery, and change them over when the first one is depleted. Note that you must have a backup battery installed to retain the data in the Psion's memory.

Charging is accomplished by connecting the Psion to an external power supply, either directly or via the docking station.

Battery Lifetime

The main battery has a life expectancy of 300-500 full discharge-recharge cycles. Over its lifetime its capacity decreases by 20%. Therefore at the end of its life decrease all usage and retention figures by 20%.

Maximum Use Time On One Charge

The battery provides 10.8V, 1500mAh. These will provide up to 7.5 hours use, requiring 2.5 hours to charge if fully depleted.

If the serial link, IrDA port or a PCMCIA card is active, the use time will be reduced. With all of these disabled, the netBook will consume approximately 165mA while being used for a normal duty cycle (10% CPU use).

10% duty cycle is the figure we would expect from using the word processor app, and spreadsheet app, and pausing while using them to think. Increasing CPU duty to 100% reduces the battery life expectancy to about 5 hours. Complex spreadsheets can easily increase the duty cycle to.

Note in particular that the highest power of PCMCIA card supported by the netBook is 300mA, and the supported 10Mb/s Psion Dacom Gold Card consumes 280mA. Running one of these cards will reduce the battery life to approximately 3 hours. We recommend using a docking station or external power source when connecting to a LAN. (The Series 7 can only use a limited set of these cards.)

Increasing the screen brightness above the default will also reduce the use time.

Backup Battery

The backup battery is a non-rechargeable, 3 volt, CR2032 coin-type cell. This will only be used when the main battery is discharged or missing, therefore in normal use it is expected to last for over six months. This expectancy is reduced if you use two main batteries and regularly change between them.

The backup battery is able to maintain the memory for several days. While being powered by the backup battery, the Psion will automatically enter a standby mode, where power is used only to retain data in the memory.

These backup cells are consumer items, which are readily and cheaply available.

Data Retention Time

While turned off, a small current is drawn to power the memory. This depends on the amount of memory installed thus a Series 7 will use less than a standard netBook, and the 64MB version of the netBook will use more.

In general use, the amount of power used by the memory is insignificant - approximately 1% of the power used by the machine when in use. However if the machine is not going to be used for a month then provisions for storage should be made, as described in the care and handling section.

In particular, if the machine is used until the main battery is almost discharged then you may have as little as four days before all the data on the internal drive is lost.

To increase this emergency data retention time, the netBook or Series 7 enters standby mode while the main battery still has about one eighth of its charge remaining. How long this will retain the data depends on the amount of RAM that needs to be supported.

RAM 16MB (Series 7) 32MB (netBook) 64MB (upgraded netBook)
Retention time on a full main battery. 9 weeks 7.5 weeks 5 weeks
Retention time after main battery is considered to be exhausted 11 days 9 days 7 days

The CR2032 backup battery is intended to replace the main battery for short periods only, such as changing batteries, or powering the memory in the case of the main battery failing. A fully charged CR2032 in a Series 7 may provide as long as a week of additional retention.

Lutz
