To the Revo and Mako Users
I am the Korean Mako User who firstly announced the
possiblity of the attachmenet of backlight system for
Revos and Makos on this Revo World message board.
With this massage I want to let you know about some stroies
related with the backlight kits and a possible way
to get the backllight parts. By now some users
(about 20 ??) who want the backlight kits have gave me some mails.
But I could not give any
positive answer to them because the kits were
prepared for the joint purchase(64kits were sold) of
Korean Users and could not be sold for one or
twousers personally. The main reason why the kits
can not be sold personally is that the parts of the
kits are sold in mass(at least 100-1000units).
So the parts are traded between makers or factories.
However, in case of the Korean user joint purchase,
I could find one maker who has some remained parts,
so that I could prepare the joint
purchase for Korean users.
During the joint purchase I discussed the possiblity of
oversea sale of the kits with the maker because the number of
the pageviews on the backlight reformation guidance in
WWW.KPSIUG. NET has been counted up to 3000(English version)
- 8000(Korean version, the news of this Revo World is linked with the Korean version).
And the maker said that if the demand could be over 100
he can supply the kit with price of 50 US dollars
and he has suggested me to help him to sell the kits for oversea users.
However, a few days ago one American Revo user Andrew
let me know that the number of the backlight kit demanders
all over the world may be just about 30-40.
Unfortunately, with this demands, the maker and I can not prepare the oversea sale.
Therefore, now I let you know the best way to get the parts of
backlight kit in your world.
The kit is composed with just 4 parts, a sheet of EL, a small
invertor, a small switch and one meter of slelnder electric wire. You can get the EL sheet from a broken
LCD of 5mx or MC218. In fact, the EL sheets Korean users purchased were
the parts of car navigation system LCD screens. The Small invertor, which I was so hard to find,
will be not so easy to get enventhough the price is not so expensive.
In case of 5mx and MC218, the invertor is embeded on the main board so
that you can not make use of the invertor part from a broken 5mxMC218)board.
The small size swich may be found in some electronic part shop
in your country.
Finally, I have 12 backlight kits which will be
used for the people who want me to reform their Revos and Makos.
However, if some of you want the kits, I will sell the kits at 50US dollars(plus
?? US dollars of postal charge) by post. And the payment should be bank remittance.

Some users have asked me about the purchase of the kits.
Nowdays I am discussing the oversea sale of the kits with the maker.
But the most critical problem is the demand and price.
And the demand is thought to be not so enough for
the maker to sell the kits for oversea users.
Therefore I am so hesitating and seeking for a affirmative way.
For example, If the number of demands could be

But, recent information from one american user says that
the number of the users who have interest in the kits is about 30-40 all over the wrold.

A Recipe to Attach a Backlight for the Diumal Revo and Mako(Version 0.5)This tip is not so complete explanation because some important photos are ommitted.
And this guidance is made on the grounds of the photos taken by the Korean modifier Naocika(this is his nickname on the web).
A few weeks later I will update this recipe to give you more complete guidance.
And, the Korean Psion group KPSIUG is preparing for joint purchase.

II procedure

Peel off the LCD panel sticker.
The sticker sticks to the LCD frame by duplex(double-faced) adhesive tape so that it will be peeled off with ease.

In this step, you have to be careful.
The frame is so weak that it could be bended by a little force.
And a little bending will crack the LCD.
* know-how
The frame of the LCD has two quadrangle tips with holes. And the case of Revo has two clasps. You can find them easily with a careful look. With two small size flat screw drivers, you may disassemble the LCD frame from the case.

The keyboard is also attached to main board by double-faced adhesive tape. So it is also easy to peeled off. But, you should be careful because you may tear off the rubber keyboard.
* Know-how
You had better pull up the keyboard from right side because the red and green LED lights key and the Esc keyt are vrey easy to be torn.
The most attempts by curious people were ended with the torn LED and Esc keys.
After peeling off the keyboard, you will find screws.

Do not pull up the main board !!
It is not easy to pull up. And pulling up may cause to break the short needle shape LCD-automatic-switch.
Pushing up the serial socket will make it easy to disassemble the main board from the case.
The two sheets of cable are kind of films. So, be careful not to tear them.
** Some photos are ommitted.
The two film-cables are connected with the main board with two sockets.
It is not so difficult to depart the cables from socket. Just.... be careful !! ^ ^

You can open this back side panel by bending the seven cramp irons marked with circles.

The black sheet is a kind of reflective sheet and should be peeled off.
If you look at the edge of the sheet( marked with the red arrow) carefully,
you will find that this sheet is composed of two sheets .
The one is black(reflective) film, the other (tranparent) polarization film.
** Be careful !!
The film which has to be peeled off is the very black film, not the polarization film.
The black color film may be peeled off easily. And some adhesive residue will be remained. But never mind the residue. The residue do not give any effect to the quality of display.

1: Two kinds of invertor
(The long is a part of 200LX backlight kit and the short is a ready-made part)
2: Two kinds of EL sheets( from broken 5MX LCD)
3: Two kinds of semi-transparent polarization film( of 200LX backlight kit)
The long inverter should be reformed becaused it is too long.
The EL sheet has to be cut because this EL shee is rather wide for the Revo and Mako LCD.
And the two polarization films are not used in this work. Forget them !!

At this step, the battery of Naocika's cammera was dried up !!
So, without photos, I will try to explain the procedure about the invertor connection.
Lay the tailored EL sheet on the polarization film without any adhesive.
And reassemble the LCD tin back cover in reverse order.
The invertor has four connection points, the two for power supply and the other two for EL sheet.
EL sheet has two electric cables whic have no polarity.
And these two cables have to be connected to the invertor.
Now two connection points are remained on the invertor.
These two points have to be connected to the arrow marked points( +, -) to get power(3.3V) from the main board.
In this step, you have to connect a switch in the middle of the one power cable to turn on/off the EL sheet.
Make a small size hole for the small size switch.
Fix the invertor and the switch at the proper places with some kinds of adhesive( glue gun or adhesive tape).
Reconnect the two film cables( of the LCD and the power) to the sockets of main board.
Reassemble the remainings.

The red circled part is the mark which was produced by Naocika. At first, Naocika did not know whether the semi-transparent film is needed or not in this modifiation. So, to know and test the direction of the polarization, he had to peel off the polrization film of the LCD. But, as I wrote above, the semi-polarization film is not necessary. And the only film used is just the EL sheet.

There are two kinds of backlighting polarization film. The one is non-inverting type and the other is inverting type. The backlight of this Revo is a inverting type.
To make a non-inverting type backlight, you have to prepare a semi-transparent polarization film. And the attatching procedure will be a more delicate and a painstaking work.
