Unless otherwise mentioned, everything here applies to the Sienna, Series
3c and Series 5. There is nothing here for owners of the 3a or earler machines.

Amazing 5 Series Software
All this stuff is written in Series 5 OPL.
-
Disk Usage V0.5 - This program goes through
all your subdirectories and displays a graphical representation of the
space used by directory a bit like the UNIX xdu program. This program works,
but isn't finished.

Get a serial cable
-
Get some software:
-
If you are running Windows 95/NT4 then download PsiWin
2.01 from the Psion web-site for free. You can now drag and drop files
between your Psion and the PC and use the built in backing up mechanism.
-
If you don't have a PC running Windows 95/NT4 then it is possible to write
an OPL program to read from/write to the serial port and then use a terminal
program at the other end to communicate. Use this to copy a proper terminal
program that supports ZMODEM to the Psion. You can then use the ZMODEM
protocol to transfer files.
-
Use the ASCII text import/export facility to transfer word processor and
spreadsheet files between your PC/Mac/Whatever and your Psion (PsiWin2.1
only converts to/from series 5 format). You will also be able to install
software from CD/disk or the internet. To retain formatting when converting
files or to synchronise Agenda you will need to buy PsiWin 1.
Linking an Ericsson GS18
to Psion
Here are three methods, in increasing order of neatness, and difficulty:
-
Use the cable supplied with the phone and a serial
cable and connect them together using a null-modem
(cross-over) cable or converter. These are available from Psion.
-
Make your own Psion serial cable,
but cross over the RTS/CTS, DCS/DTR and send/receive lines and put a plug
on the end which will plug into your GS18 cable. If you don't already have
a plain Psion serial cable you can then make/buy a null-modem
(cross-over) cable to connect the same wire to your PC.
-
Remove the GS18 connectior from the supplied lead and solder on a home-made
Psion serial cable in place of a nomal 9-pin connector.
Getting hold of a serial cable
Note: The Sienna, Series 3c and Series 5 serial cables and Psiwin cables
are exactly the same.
-
You can buy one ready-made for £26 + postage from Exportech
(Telephone 0181 682 3313)
-
The Psion end is a vaguely standard connector (almost PCMCIA-type), so
making one isn't very hard. Details here.
It should cost you under £20 inclusive for a one off down to around
£12 for "lots".
-
Psion apparently sell them - for around £50, so I'd forget that idea.

Subject: Ericsson GS18 to Psion Serie3c connectors wiring description

A while ago I decided to build a short cable between Psion Serie3c and the
Ericsson GS18, because adding 3 cables (Psion + null modem + GS18) together
is not really a "pocket" solution.
Now I use the PsiMail Internet package with this cable and can access the
net from my pocket. I tried it on the new Psion Serie5 and the Messaging
suite and it also works perfectly well.
For a working communication between psion and GS18, parameters used are
these :
XON/XOFF = OFF
RTC/CTS = ON
DSR/DTR = OFF
DCD = OFF
Here following is the details of the wiring between the Psion and the GS18.
I built the cable with the one found in the GS18 box and a standard Psion
serial cable. It is difficult but possible to solder the GS18 connector as
it is very small but nethertheless, being patient, it is possible.
